Karine de Souza’s life has been anything but easy. The Brazilian woman was diagnosed at the age of three with Xeroderma Pigmentosum, a rare genetic condition that makes her extremely sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Even a short exposure to sunlight can cause severe skin damage and increase her risk of developing skin cancer. To protect herself, Karine wears high-SPF sunscreen daily, even indoors, and has spent much of her life avoiding direct sunlight.
The condition has had a significant impact on her health. Over the years, Karine has undergone more than 130 surgeries to remove cancerous lesions caused by sun exposure. Some of these procedures resulted in the removal of her lower lip and part of her nose. Beyond the physical challenges, she has also faced emotional struggles, including cruel comments and judgment from strangers who focused on her appearance rather than her strength and character.
Despite these hardships, Karine refused to let her condition define her future. Through social media, she met Edmilson, a man who admired her courage and resilience. Their connection quickly grew into a loving relationship, and he embraced not only Karine but also her three children. Although the couple faced hurtful online criticism, they remained focused on the love and support they found in each other.
Today, Karine’s story continues to inspire people around the world. In 2023, she and Edmilson welcomed a daughter named Zaia after years of trying to grow their family. Through every challenge, Karine has remained positive, encouraging others to embrace life, believe in themselves, and never give up on happiness.
