Woman, 22, left paralysed after ‘unimaginable incident’ while knitting in park with best friend

A devastating windstorm in Santa Rosa, California, changed the life of 22-year-old Jasmine Mayer after a falling tree branch struck her during a sudden burst of severe weather.

Jasmine had been peacefully knitting with a friend on May 17, 2026, when strong winds unexpectedly brought down a nearby tree branch. The impact caused catastrophic injuries, and emergency services rushed her to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

Doctors diagnosed severe spinal cord damage along with fractured vertebrae, broken ribs, internal injuries, and a dangerous blood clot. Her condition required immediate and complex medical intervention.

According to a GoFundMe organized by her family, Jasmine is currently partially paralysed in her lower body. However, early signs of sensation returning in her legs and feet have offered some cautious hope.

Medical teams are reportedly performing spinal fusion surgery to stabilize her condition. Because her spinal cord was not completely severed, doctors believe there is potential for gradual recovery with time and rehabilitation.

Her father, Andy Mayer, described the incident as an “unimaginable accident,” emphasizing that no one was at fault. He also noted that Jasmine has remained remarkably positive despite the severity of her injuries.

As she begins a long recovery journey, her family is raising funds to cover medical costs, rehabilitation, mobility aids, transportation, and home modifications needed for accessibility.

The campaign has already raised significant support, reflecting both community compassion and hope that Jasmine’s condition may continue to improve over time through treatment and therapy.
